Empowerment can enhance social inclusion

Apps such as Be My Eyes have simple ideas and without overstating the impact, can are life changing.

I’m sure we’ll be talking more about Australia’s National Disability Insurance Scheme, but I want to post a highlights video that was produced by the NDIS.

As you watch the interviews at the start, and then look at the presentations, you get the feeling that this is an exciting time for not only Australians with disability, but new ideas and innovation to assist people with disability (PwD) will transcend borders.

In the past two or so years, I have learnt how beneficial smartphones and tablet devices are for PwD. Apps such as Be My Eyes are just genius – the ideas are simple and without overstating the impact, are life changing.

Technology is enhancing social inclusion.

My favourite quote from the highlights clip, “the more empowerment I have, the more I can give back to society” sums up what attitude an inclusive Australia should take.

When the NDIS was first announced and launched, I knew very little of the details or benefits. And I think, reading a lot of the commentary at the time, and even now, the focus seems to be on care and welfare (rightly so), which is a crucial and very important element. But with conferences such as these, the social benefits the NDIS will bring through exciting innovation are slowly becoming more and more evident. And this is just as important.

My favourite quote from the highlights clip, “the more empowerment I have, the more I can give back to society” sums up what attitude an inclusive Australia should take.
